Cisco says businesses falling behind on security threats

Cisco warns that IT managers and security professionals are failing to keep up with the emerging threat landscape, according to its semiannual Security 2010.

The company says there are “tectonic movements in the field of information security, since the current boom of social networks, virtualization and mobile devices continue to drive change in the market and lead to security threats beyond the measures to prevent them.

Tarek Houbballah, manager of systems engineering, Cisco, commented: “Technological innovations are changing the way we live, work, play, share information and communicate. Because consumers tend to be early adopters, companies often have difficulty adapting to existing policies address the use of their employees preferred technology. With a number of converging tectonic forces in the market, now is the time for companies to transform their IT models to adapt to the new network without borders and increasing security problems. ”

Cisco’s report includes five key recommendations for IT managers to protect against security threats, including the implementation granular security policies per user for the application and data access, especially on virtualized systems, strict limits on access to enterprise data, creating corporate policies for managing the use of mobile devices, the investment in tools to manage and monitor the activities of cloud, and guidance to employees on the use of social media in the workplace.

Cisco warned however, that corporate policies on social media may not be effective, with 50% of respondents to the survey Cisco global ignoring company policy at least once a week, and 27 % reported that changing the configuration of devices to access corporate applications banned.

While not strictly a security threat, Cisco warned of the continuing loss of productivity caused by the application of social networks and games in particular. Cisco Security Intelligence Operations reported that a total sample of Facebook users, 7% of spending on average 68 minutes a day to play Farmville, Mafia Wars 5% play for 52 minutes per day and 4% Play World Café for 36 minutes a day. The report also raised the possibility of criminal malware embedded in such applications.

Other threats noted in the report were the continued growth of spam, with spam volumes for 2010 expected to be 30% from 2009, and the emergence of multi-vector attacks spam with a focus on the establishment of the keyloggers, backdoors and bots, and the emerging profile of cyber criminals as the early adopters of new technologies, both in terms of using technology as a means of attack, and as a method to attack by coordinating and sharing intelligence.

The report also noted the growing concern among security forces that terrorists may also be using social networks for communication and coordination.

Cisco VTP domain

When I make any new VLAN on the server are automatically performed on all customers … … … … … thats ok … … … well … … … … .. but when I can I add particular VLAN interfaces to any server in the number of members is not copied to the customers! VLAN simply means getting copied, but no information about the members of interface. I configured correctly and Trunking VTP domain. Please tell me what to do on the server or clients to be members Vlan interfaces back also?

The individual belonging to a LAN port of local importance only to a switch. Take two switches A and B. Establish a registry, a server is, B is a customer. Add 10 VLANs on the server. Di 10-19. Switch B can learn from the VLANs That means that the switch B is known to exist. That means you can send any traffic on them to make one if necessary. Add VLAN12 ports on switch A – B without changing the ports to find really be. It is normal to expect that the addition of a port on a switch to a specific VLAN must be cascaded to all switches to a port should be in that VLAN – which happen to add the port 25, if switch 2 is just another port 25? The presence of devices in a VLAN is set to L2 MAC normal transfer and learning. 12 serial port on the switch and connect to a PC VLAN12 in. In the first, which is likely to send a DHCP request. This is going to flood all parties as is the question. This means that also crosses the trunk link to sitch B, so that the switch B is added to the MAC address of your CAM table for VLAN 12 on the trunk link.

New Cisco router will have little impact on Stock Exchanges

Cisco, which competes with Juniper (NYSE: JNPR) the business of networking equipment, recently announced a new generation of core routers called CRS-3. Routing Carrier System 3 (SRC-3) will be able to offer data transmission speeds of up to 322 Terabits per second, much higher than the current core routers.

Routers are central to Internet service providers

based routers, such as the CRS-3 routers are more advanced in comparison to the most widely used enterprise and edge routers. core routers are designed to be used in the backbone (or core), operated mainly by large Internet service providers (AT & T (T), Verizon (VZ)), to direct Internet traffic data from the edge routers that are closer to the point of data delivery (house, office).

Business Routers Only 15% of the shares of Cisco

We estimate the router business is only 15% of the estimated $ 23 price of the shares of Cisco routers Trefis that plants are a small fraction of this tax. For example, we believe that Cisco will earn about $ 1.4 billion in core routers (such as SRC-3) in 2010 compared to $ 3.2 billion enterprise routers and U.S. $ 2.5 billion edge routers.

We then discuss how SRC-3 is designed to help network operators (AT & T) to manage volumes of data explosion of the Internet and how the success of SRC-3 may help Cisco maintain its lead in market share within the $ 2,500,000,000 core router market.

Explosive growth of Internet data networks promote improved

Internet data, consisting of audio, video, images and text, has grown rapidly in recent years due to the increasing prevalence of broadband and increased use of devices such as smartphones. For example:

1. AT & T network traffic increased by 40% in 2009 alone
Smartphone data usage will only increase the pressure on existing networking. Cisco estimates that global mobile traffic will grow at an annual rate of approximately 108% over the next five years

2. Global IP traffic expected to grow at an annualized rate of about 40%
With increasing video traffic over the Internet and 3-D content to be launched soon, the demand for bandwidth continue to increase. Cisco estimates global IP traffic will grow at an annualized rate of about 40% over the next four years.

The new technology helps Cisco Router Market Share Lead Store

New technologies such as router CRS-3 may help Cisco maintain its competitive advantage in the router business. Cisco’s market share in the main market router 2.5 billion U.S. dollars has increased from 40% in 2005 to over 50% in 2009.

We believe that gains in market share will remain flat at 54% in the period considered Trefis period due to increased competition from Juniper router makers, Alcatel-Lucent and Huawei.

Cisco to offer expanded network options

Cisco Systems is hoping to put some distance between himself and his rivals with a new technology that was announced this week.
At the fair telecommunications SUPERCOMM 2001 in Atlanta on Tuesday, said Cisco has enhanced its family of Internet routers and developed new software that will enable telecommunications service providers to more easily manage a network built with Cisco hardware . With the software, for example, service providers can offer Web access to clients without sending technicians to your home or business.

Analysts say the new software will save you money and service providers will help Cisco to fend off rivals such as networking are Juniper Networks heels.

As Nortel Networks, Lucent Technologies and Cisco has been battered financially by the economic slowdown and lower spending by companies and service providers. To attract customers, Cisco and its rivals have begun to reduce prices on its products, but companies are also selling the new technology to help service providers generate new revenue.

“What Cisco is doing is covering the space with products with a lot of new features. And they’re going to handle them all with a single system,” said Michael Howard, an analyst at Infonetics Research. “Cisco has become more intelligent about how to build products. It is a more unified set of products.”

Cisco announced on Tuesday a new XML-based add-on for its Internetworking Operating System (IOS) software, which operates the network equipment business.

XML (Extensible Markup Language) is a Web standard for exchanging information that proponents say will reshape the business to business communications. It not only allows customers to easily and cheaply conduct online transactions with their customers and partners, also offers a sound, video and other data on the Web.

Cisco, however, is using XML to link the company’s equipment new and existing networks, so that all can be managed from a central location, the representatives of Cisco, said. As part of the announcement, the company has begun shipping a new device, called the Cisco Intelligence 2100, to help service providers manage their networks.

Before the extension XML, Cisco customers had to manage each Cisco product line separately. “Now we will be able to put it all together in one system,” said Howard.

Cisco also announced on Tuesday five new additions to its family of Internet routers, the technology includes Internet traffic from point to point on a network at high speeds. The high-end routers will help the company to better compete against rival Juniper, which has captured 38 percent of the lucrative market for Cisco and 59 percent.

The new Cisco 12406 Router offers the same performance as other high-end Cisco routers, but is smaller, analysts said. The product is aimed at service providers with limited space. high-end routers sit in the “core” network service providers, where those most affected by Internet traffic during transport.

Cisco also announced a compact version of the Cisco 10000 family of routers, devices used to build networks in the area where the service provider network connection.

The company launched a higher-capacity version of its optical equipment for metropolitan areas, an explosion of market rivals include Nortel, Lucent, Foundry Networks, Extreme Networks and others. Cisco optical devices, called the ONS 15454 features an OC-192 Interface, technology that ship traffic on the Internet 10 gigabits per second.

The networking giant announced two routers for better performance in its 7000 product line, which are designed to help service providers offer Web access to businesses. The new router 7400, for example, can support a variety of connections for high-speed network, including digital subscriber lines (DSL), cable, ISDN and T1 services, Cisco executives said.
