What’s the Biggest Threat to Data Security?

Chief information security officers at banks say their top priority is keeping data of all kinds (customer, employee, credit, performance, you name it) safe from attacks. They answered candidly when we asked who or what the greatest risks are.

Too Much Data Everywhere

There’s a huge pool of data out there that is hard to protect, and it also provides attackers with lots of ammunition.

“The more data out there, the higher the risk,” says Dominic Venturo, chief innovation officer at U.S. Bank in Minneapolis. “Even with things like PCI, we still see data breaches. We’ve also got this old system of user ID and password and the fact that consumers are reusing that data all over the place. On top of that, even when they don’t reuse them, passwords that are human-friendly are often insecure or easy to guess.” Continue reading “What’s the Biggest Threat to Data Security?”

Is Singapore property really a buyer’s market

Over the past year, we have heard “news” about how the market is slowing down, and how interested buyers should buy a place now to enjoy a steal while they still can. Exactly how true is this? Should interested buyers be considering getting back into the market soon? Or would they be better off employing a wait-and-see attitude for now.

The results of the Housing Board’s latest Build-To-Order (BTO) sales exercise, which closed on Monday (30 May), show that buyers still favour flats in mature estates, reported Channel NewsAsia. This trend was particularly evident in the mature towns of Ang Mo Kio and Bedok, where BTO flats were offered for the first time in three years.

It seems that mature estates in Singapore are still highly sought after by new home buyers across both private and public residential homes. In the private Singapore property market, Gem Residences located in the mature estate of Toa Payoh clocked positive sales last weekend with 315 units out of the 578 units available sold, of which 300 of the transactions happened during the VIP sales on Friday. The units were sold at an average price of $1,426 per square foot (psf).

Poor Security Thwarts Three-Quarters of Big Data Projects

Information and analytics make up the new face of innovation for corporates—who hasn’t heard the term “Big Data,” after all. But IT security challenges are getting in the way of executing the vision of dynamic, usable, instantly accessible data frameworks, with three-quarters (73%) of organizations reporting that their business initiatives have been thwarted by data security gaps.

According to a survey from Dataguise, “Strategies for Securing Sensitive Data,” companies are inexorably transitioning toward big data frameworks, including cloud-based environments such as Microsoft Azure HDInsight. In fact, 28% of respondents report more than a year of experience with these big data repositories, and another 38% say they’re in various stages of adoption.

Yet, they’re finding that data security challenges often have a negative impact on their efforts; that 73% said that data security concerns have been so worrisome that in many cases they’ve terminated their projects until further notice.

Even with multiple layers of security in place, less than half of all respondents did not believe that their data was secure, with only 47% of respondents confident that their sensitive data throughout their organization was safe.
